Request For Assistance
Before we can provide formal assistance to First Peoples groups in a native title claim or settlement process, we must assess the potential strength of a claim within the legal framework provided by the Native Title Act 1993 and the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic).
This assessment will depend on:
- The breadth of support within the group to progress the claim.
- Strength of connection to the claim area through traditional law and custom.
- The borders of the claim area.
- Disputes within the proposed group and/or with neighbouring groups.
Groups will need to provide an initial written application, including as much information as possible in the areas outlined above and a description of the members of the group.
For more information about applications for assistance and a statement of procedures, read our
Guidelines for Assistance to Native Title Groups.
