Third Party Provider PanelS

Following our Strategic Review, the FNLRS board has made changes to consideration of assistance requests under s 2033BB of the Native Title Act. Prior to the changes, the CEO would consider and decide on assistance requests to provide support to a native title group, and whether that support will be provided inhouse or on a brief out basis. Now the decision rests with a sub-committee of the board (Facilitation and Assistance Request Assessment Committee) which includes three board members and an independent expert.

In situations where support is provided through an external service provider, we are developing Third Party Provider Panels, one for lawyers (solicitors and barristers) and one for non-legal service providers (including researchers, facilitators and other advisors and consultants) . These are lists of lawyers and other professionals with requisite skills and experience who would be eligible to receive funding from us if an assistance request was granted and FNLRS was not able to provide the assistance. The use of third-party arrangements has increased in recent years and is likely to increase further in line with the review’s recommendation.
